Embedding Character Education in STEM Learning through Natural Materials
May 9, 2024
The approach of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in education is considered capable of meeting the demands for quality human resources that are able to compete globally in the future. Children are trained to find solutions to every problem by using critical thinking skills, utilizing technology, and having scientific skills. The application of the STEM approach must of course be adjusted to the level of growth and development of children, age, and level of education.
STEM can be introduced early on with simple and easy-to-find equipment around, one of which is natural materials. Through the STEM approach by utilizing natural materials, children can get to know their environment better, thereby creating a sense of love for their environment, especially natural resources.
The use of natural materials in the application of STEM is of various kinds and can be adapted to the needs and abilities of children. Betty Yulia Wulansari, M.Pd., a PG PAUD lecturer at Universitas Muhammadiyah Ponorogo, demonstrated several interesting STEM projects using natural materials.
Besides cheap and easy to obtain, natural materials can also increase the attraction of children to explore and solve problems. To see the excitement of how STEM projects are made from natural ingredients, you can look forward to the Reogify Youtube Channel.
